Four Counties Boating

Courses

Practical Boating Skills (PBS) course
In order to maximise your enjoyment of the waterways, we recommend that you first take a one day Practical Boating Skills course.  For the absolute novice or those simply wishing to gain confidence, we offer a mix of practical 'hands-on' experience and background boating theory specifically designed to give you the necessary skills to navigate with confidence.  The course can be held on one of our craft or on your own boat.

The RYA Inland Waters Helmsman's Certificate (IWHC) course
For those with previous boating experience and wishing to build upon existing skills and apply them to a canal or river environment, we offer instruction in the finer points of helming a boat to give added confidence and the ability to deal  with particularly tricky situations.  This course demands a minimum standard of practical boat handling skill but is still designed as an enjoyable day out on the river or canal on one of our craft or your own boat.

Combined course
We recommend that both partners in a helm / crew situation are able to handle the boat in a competant manner in a variety of situations.  There may well be occasions when one of the pair is unable to undertake their normal function and the other has to carry out tasks or manoeuvres that they would not usually attempt.  We often find that one partner wishes to build upon existing skills whilst the other simply wishes to gain confidence in basic boat handling techniques.  To this end we are able to 'mix and match' the two types of course described above.

Note
The RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman's Certificate (IWHC) plus a CEVNI (European inland waters traffic regulations) exam pass is currently the minimum requirement for an International Certificate of Competance (ICC) - inland waters only.  Four Counties Boating is an RYA recognised Training Centre authorised to assess practical helming competence, give CEVNI tuition, and hold examinations leading to the issue of the requisite certification for navigating the European network of rivers and canals.
