Course Content
Practical exercises will include :-
Casting off, landing, and mooring.
Standard manoeuvres at low speed.
Manoeuvring in a confined space.
Proceeding through locks.
Simulated - Man overboard / recovery.
Engine failure / other emergencies.
Background knowledge taught will include :-
Knots and ropework.
Ancillary equipment, its use and storage.
Steering. Pivot point. Way carried in neutral.
Loading and trim. Paddlewheel effect. Bank effect
Rules of the road. Speed limits. Local regulations.
Crew and their function. Communication.
Other users of the waterways and their needs.
Other areas touched upon are likely to include :-
Anchoring. Buoyage. Towing. Bow Thrusters.
VHF procedures. Licensing, insurance and certification.
Petrol and Diesel mechanics. Fuels and safety measures.
Natural History. The environment and protection of wildlife habitats.
Other classes and forms of powerboating.
Handling characteristics of other craft.
Other types of waterway - tidal and non tidal.
