At the end of this practical Inland Waters Cruising course you will be
confident in your ability to handle powered craft in a safe and responsible
manner and to gain maximum enjoyment from time spent on the water.
Specifically you will :
Have practical experience of the handling characteristics of the particular
craft in which instruction takes place.
Handle the boat in a seamanlike manner and in accordance with national
& local regulations and signage.
Appreciate the various factors that can affect the handling of a variety
of craft.
Understand the need for familiarisation with the workings of a particular
vessel prior to taking active control of it.
Be able to carry out routine checks of a vessel's fabric, engine, and other
equipment.
Have an understanding of maintenance of levels, the operation of locks
and moveable bridges, and the use of tunnels.
Be familiar with the handling of warps and the deployment of anchors.
Be able to secure the boat to a variety of objects using appropriate knots.
Be aware of a helmsman's obligations and be able to communicate effectively
with crew and other water users.
Be aware of the environment, its care and well-being.
Recognise the dangers inherent in operating a powered vessel and know how
to cope with a variety of potentially life threatening situations.
Know how, and under what circumstances, to contact emergency and other
services associated with Inland Waterways.
Adopt safe boating practices and take a pride in your boating skills.
